I watched Hard Candy last night. Never seen it before and wanted to view it since it stars Ellen Page. Not going lie. Don't really know what to write here. It's one of those movies so disturbing and well, fucked up that you don't know how to express yourself. Reminds me a little of my feelings after viewing films like American Psycho or Happiness (another film about a pedophile). You know it's a good film, but that's all you really know.
In case you are unfamiliar with the premise it's real simple. Hayley (Ellen Page) and Jeff (Patrick Wilson) talk online and decide to meet. One problem. She is 14 and he is 32. Right away you realize that he is probably a pedophile, but you don't realize that rather than her being in trouble, he is. The film pulls a complete 180 and that makes it work well. For the remainder of the film, she tortures him and makes him suffer. You don't really feel bad for the guy since he is a pedophile, but it makes you feel squeamish.
It's a real challenging role for Page and it shows that she has a lot of potential. Of course, that potential was realized a year later with Juno. Although, this film is nothing like Juno, but that's why I think it proves she is a great actress with plenty of range. She goes from playing a somewhat masochist girl to playing this quirky, cute pregnant teenager.
The film itself is not amazing, but it's an indie film that is worth watching. Especially if you like Ellen Page.
